MBBS in China for Indian students: the rules that matter

If you plan to practise medicine in India, your foreign degree must meet the National Medical Commission's rules. Many students learn this too late. Check these before you pay any fee.

Last checked October 2026 against the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021. Always confirm with the NMC's own notices before you enrol.

NMC requirements要求

The FMGL rules, in plain English

These apply to students who joined a foreign medical course on or after 18 November 2021.

RuleWhat it means for you
At least 54 months of studyThe course itself must last at least 54 months (4.5 years). NMC counts months, not years.
12-month internship abroadAfter the course, a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution.
One institution throughoutThe whole course, training and internship must be done at the same foreign institution, outside India.
Taught in EnglishThe degree must be taught in English.
Recognised at homeThe degree must be recognised by China's own regulator, letting you practise there on par with its citizens.
NEET qualificationIndian students generally need to qualify NEET before taking admission abroad. Confirm the current rule with the NMC before you enrol.
Back in IndiaPass the licensing exam (FMGE). The NMC's latest draft (August 2026) keeps FMGE until NExT starts, so check the current NMC notice. Then a further 12-month supervised internship in India.

Watch out注意

Myths that cost students years

"This university is NMC-approved." The NMC does not approve or recognise individual foreign universities. What matters is whether your course meets the FMGL rules above.

"The last year can be done in India." No part of the course or internship may be done in India or a third country.

"Medium is English, so no Chinese needed." Clinical years involve real patients. Every MBBS student in China should learn working Chinese.
